Credit Cards Rewards
With so many competitors between banks and credit institutions, most credit card companies offer reward cards to lure new customers always attracted by the offer of getting cash back or reward points that can be exchanged for airline miles, merchandise, or other goods.
This is an increasingly trend on the credit market, appealing indeed but not always the best option for customers ignoring the hidden frills. Reward credit cards are just regular cards labeled that way to entice the cardholders to use them to be rewarded with points for their purchases. The more money spent the more number of points you earn to redeem for merchandise, services, cash rebates and more.
Obviously, those rewards are what make some credit cards popular among consumers and the reason why many standard credit cards issuers have developed rewards programs to encourage the use of their card and keep customers. According to Mintel's Comperemedia, a direct mail research, about 50% of all credit cards on the market include some kind of reward component.
Furthermore, 80% of those same credit cards come with no annual fee making them more attractive for consumers that prefer them over other credit cards ignoring they usually carry a higher annual percentage rate (APR) than common credit cards. A typical reward cards annual percentage rate is about 14%, meaning 4 points higher than any average non-reward credit card.
To make a reward card genuinely rewarding, the cardholder needs to make sure the card issuer is offering the best value for the invested money and that the card is suited for the way they intend to use it. Some reward cards are limited to certain goods or services that sometimes are not the usual merchandise a consumer wants to buy, but implicitly forced to do it in order to accumulate points toward rewards.
This is just one of the many reasons explained by experts regarding this type of credit card and advising the consumer to analyze the terms before applying for a reward card. If you are a frequent traveler or a big spender, then a reward card is for you because those are purchases you will desire and will reward you more points to spend.
The Wall Street Journal considers the reward cards offering points tend to be a better deal that those other offering cash rebates. For instance, a cash back card rewards you with $250 back after spending $25,000, but with a point card, you earn 25,000 points for the same amount of money worth up to $500 if they are exchanged for an airline ticket.
